As of this week I am officially on board with Langley, BC’s local continuing education to teach a 9-hour course called iPad Photo Art starting later this winter. It’s an intro to transforming photos into artwork for iPad owners — images that can be used for calendars, greetings cards, numerous home decor projects including framed fine art, etc. Depending on the level of skill of the participants, I’ll be touching on principles and techniques for optimizing images on the iPad prior to importing into various creative apps, how to get the most out of the apps, and many techniques, tips and tricks to create images that stand out in a crowd.
With this in mind, during the coming weeks I’ll be playing around in numerous apps to find the most economical, easy to learn, most creative combination of apps available, along with a few more complex apps. I like what I’m using right now, but need to add a few more effects to suit other people’s tastes not to mention abilities, plus I’d like to know what other apps can do.
My first experiment took an image of a homely echinacea specimen, processed it to improve the image, and then ran it through a few apps to produce different effects. Of course, there were dozens of other possibilities, I just want to get a feel for the apps.

Oh great fun 🙂 Very similar to what I’ve been attempting with my daily NaBloPoMo posts this month, which have all been taken and processed on my Sony phone, trying to show everyone the possibilities with phoneography and digital art. I’ve mostly been using Google+ Photo App and Adobe PS Touch.

Yes. 🙂 There is some phenomenal phoneography out there! I’m hoping there are people out there who want to create on their mobile devices. Perhaps people who’d like to be creative but can’t justify the expense of desktop software. I like PS Touch too but for the course I think I need to go with something with a shallower learning curve for those who’ve never been exposed to photoshop type editing. The emphasis is going to be on the artsy apps, but PS Touch is quite prominent in my workflow so I have to find an alternative or just teach the parts that the participants will need. I have TangledFX on my pad, plus a couple of paint-oriented apps, after this past week I now have a couple of dozen prospects that I have to try out and ferret out what they’re capable of so I can select the best options.

Me, too, LOL! I think the most fun apps I use are iOS only, sorry. 😦 Of course, PS Touch and Snapseed are universal, and they’re important apps for me in iOS, but they’re not as much fun as, say, TangledFX. But do check for android availability, I haven’t looked into it. 🙂

Definitely. I found one last night. Camera+? I used Tangled FX first and then Camera+. It’s an older app but it’s not too shabby!

I’ve seen camera+ in passing in the app store but I thought it was an app that works with the device camera… Maybe I’ll check it out. Did you use that on today’s landscape image? Looks super, BTW!

Todays bw wasnt an app but i sure wish theyd make more fun cool filterss on the computer. I guess theres more money in apps these days. Wait…did you tell me that already? lol.

Me too. To be honest, I hadn’t realized until this fall that there are a lot of apps now that will spit out full-sized images. Looks like I’ll be including more and more iPad processing in my workflow. 🙂

I’ll have to check that out because those apps are really amazing! I can replicate some of the effects in PS but certainly not all of them.

I almost never use iPhone or iPad apps on my images here unless I post an iPhone photo. I’m way too lazy to ship them to and from lol. I did use it on that coneflower though….that one I’m getting a lot of mileage out of haha. I’ll post it in the next few weeks. I’m trying to get people to forget about it a bit before I drag it out again. Glad you liked the landscape!
