About

I live in beautiful southwestern British Columbia, Canada, near Vancouver. I love animals, particularly horses, and nature. I also like travel and to photograph animals and the outdoors, to capture the natural world around us, frequently focusing on everyday little details that most of us often miss.Β  I have an entry-level camera with lenses that aren’t always as sharp as I would like, or that aren’t capable of reproducing a scene the way I see it — luckily I thoroughly enjoy post-processing my photos to better reflect my interpretation of a subject, and I plan to share some of these images with anyone who follows my blog.

I worked with horses for a lot of years before retiring a couple of years ago. My heart horse died around the same time as I retired, and since then I have been channeling my creative energy into exploring other means of artistic expression that have interested me for many years, or new subjects that I stumble across during my explorations.

    • You’re welcome, and thanks for checking mine out… πŸ™‚ Horses can seem huge, unpredictable and intimidating. They are extremely sensitive and social, but appropriate handling is key for both humans and horses to feel safe. It’s just a matter of education and exposure to the right kind of approach. πŸ™‚

    • Thank you so much for nominating me…I appreciate it! 😊 however I’m going to decline as among other things, I’m away from home for a couple of months and not getting in as much computer time as usual, so this just isn’t a good time. Thanks again!😊

  7. Wow, I came her by way of Laura Macky and am not disappointed at all. Is it to early in your photography “career” to be told that you inspire me? I read on one of your posts, I believe, that you shoot with a t3i and kit lens, which came out about one month after I bought my T2i at full price. And I’ve always complained about the quality of the kit lens but could not afford a better quality lens. I recently discovered Perfect Effects 8 which has helped me immensely in my post processing. I hope you have room for me to follow you as I love your images!

    • Thank you so much for your comments, Emilio. I’m greatly flattered to be an inspiration and would be very pleased for you to follow my blog. The more the merrier! πŸ™‚ You have some beautiful images on your blog, too, and I plan to take a closer look at them in the next little while. I agree, the software I use really has helped compensate somewhat for the quality of the kit lenses. Lightroom is my main software for cataloguing and processing, if an image needs more help with sharpening I take it into NIK software, and for artistic treatments it’s NIK and PS Elements, the latter for the addition of textures, etc. I do use PE8 from time to time, but I don’t have the full onOne package so NIK usually wins out for most things. Like you, I like PE8 well enough, but not as a standalone plugin. I use it with LR and then recommended it to my sister when it was offered as a promo, but she only has iPhoto and using them together doesn’t make for a smooth workflow at all! Thanks again, and I look forward to taking a closer look at your blog. πŸ™‚

  8. Hi Katrina,

Thanks for liking one of my photos because it allowed me to discover your wonderful blog, and your creative use of Photoshop techniques. I truly enjoyed browsing through your collection. Some of your work makes me imagine what CΓ©zanne might have done, if he had been given a camera and a computer.

I look forward to seeing more of your work!

  9. Hi Katrina, thanks for checking out Yalakom and liking my chick pic πŸ™‚

I like your blog and many pictures. I share your passion for horses and absolutely love BC. I lived there for one year and a half, way to short, and I don’t think I could ever get enough of the natural wonders of this region.

I hope you enjoyed your trip to the French Alps and Alsace πŸ™‚

BC is really lovely, I agree. It has so many different kinds of environment. Thank you, yes, I had a great time in France in spite of the weather trying to make life miserable. It did hold off most of the days we were planning to do stuff. Thanks for dropping by mythical horse. πŸ™‚

    • Thank you for visiting. πŸ™‚ Tofino, yes! It’s been at the top of my list for 4 years now. But it keeps getting bumped in favor of other things, and my budget dictates either/or, not both. It doesn’t look like I’ll make it in 2015 either, but I’ll be trying! I so want to spend a few days with my camera storm watching or otherwise!

  10. Where I live in Wyoming we have wild horses – not beautiful, but extremely hardy; small, stocky, short heads, rough coats. It will be severely cold tonight, about 15* below zero. I can’t imagine how they survive. Thanks for visiting Artsyberger.

  12. Hi Katrina, I lived in Canada for 14 years, 10 years of which were in Kaslo B.C. I loved riding and even managed to enter a couple of small gymkhanas and do the barrel race! Now I live in France and ride motorbikes instead – and I’m a whole lot older. Looks like your blog is going to be great, love the snow geese, so I’ve signed up!
